ROLLS

TONGUE BASS

The tongue bass is a powerful tongue oscillation that creates a low-end sound that transfers excellently on a mic.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ BDD }

How it's done

The tongue bass is a combination of a Classic Kick Drum { B } and a Tongue Oscillation { DD }.
{ B } + { DD } = { BDD }
  1. Purr your 'r' like a cat by placing the bottom of your tongue lightly on the roof of your mouth
  2. Remove the vocalization so you only have the rolling of the 'r'
  3. Make your mouth as stiff and closed as possible and create a very tight airflow
  4. Move your mouth into different shapes to change the pitch - e.g.  'ee' and 'oo'

VOCAL SYNTHESIZERS

SIREN

This sound replicates the inhuman sound effect of a police siren. When used well, this can sound absolutely incredible. It takes a fair bit of practice to be able to do it and lots of experimenting to find the right position for your mouth, but keep at it and you'll have it in no time.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ RRn } { ^RRn } or { FFn } {^FFn }

How it's done

  1. Think of the word "new" by combining the 'n' sound and the long 'u' sound
  2. Sing a note in your falsetto voice
  3. Pucker your lips as if you were going to kiss someone, and position your teeth on your lower lips
  4. Sing while almost creating filter through the position between your top teeth and your bottom lip
Pro tip: This can be done inwards and adding a vocal tap may make it sound even more synthetic

VOICE ALTERATIONS

POLYPHONIC OVERTONE SINGING

Tuvan overtone singing, also known as polyphonic singing or throat singing, is a vocal technique that creates two different tones through the resonance created by the airflow of sound through the lungs, throat, and mouth.

How it's done

  1. Sing and elongate the letter 'e' in your singing voice
  2. Transition from the 'ee' sound to an 'ooh' sound, changing your mouth position
  3. Pull your tongue back to the back of your throat to create more space and will amplify the overtone
  4. Reposition your tongue while singing the 'ee' to 'ooh' to find the sweet spot and you hear the overtone sound
  5. Continue changing your mouth positions and the position of your tongue to hit different overtone notes
  6. Practice!

TRUMPET

This sound is the replication of the trumpet sound done through the vibration of the teeth or the lips caused by a forced vocalization. This sound is great to add a melody to your beatbox routine.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ Brm }

How it's done

There are two main ways of doing the trumpet sound: using your top teeth to vibrate against your bottom lip or using your lips strictly on one side of your mouth.
  1. Hum falsetto (that's high pitched - like Mickey Mouse)
  2. Put your top teeth over your bottom lip and make a slight smile OR create a small space between your lips on either your right or left side of your mouth
  3. Sing in your falsetto voice while forcefully pushing out air
  4. Add a loose lip oscillation or uvular oscillation to create a vibrato effect
  5. Close your eyes, let rip and pretend you are Louis Armstrong
Pro tip: Spice up your sound by using uvular oscillations and vocal scratches!

INWARD BASS

The inward bass is a powerful chest bass that can be vocalized. It is also a very effective inward sound, so you can take a deep gasp of air while doing it.

How it's done

  1. Relax your throat
  2. Exhale all the air out of your lungs and take a deep breath inwards. If you know how to do the chest bass, it's the inward variation of that.
  3. There might be a slight rumble in your vocal chords, that will help you find the crack that you should focus on building
  4. Vocalize the word "hip" and "hop" inwards
  5. Create a breathier inward vocalization and build your throat strength
  6. Keep practicing and variations like inward click rolls or a 'k snare.'
