Hi-Hats and cymbals

BASIC HI HAT

These are the most simple hi hat sounds, which replicate a closed hi hat.
The closed hat is part of the staple kick, hat and snare used as the basis of most beats. It might be worth practicing doing many closed hat sounds in a row to get your speed and accuracy up. These can be done in several ways, coupled with small variants to enhance your beats. Hi hats are essential to any beat, filling in the space between your kick drums and snares.
Pro tip: Try to vary your hi hat volume to create a groove and experiment with syncopation!

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ t }

How it's done:

  1. The basic hi hat is done by making the "t" sound as if you were saying "hat" or "cat."
  2. Remove the vocalization and focus on strengthening the consonant sound of "t"
    1. You may create this sound by breathing outward or just building pressure in your mouth and releasing a short burst of air
  3. Follow through with an "s" sound to create an open hi hat effect

OPEN HI-HAT

The open hi-hat is the replication of the opening of the hi-hat cymbals, which creates a residual hi-hat sound that will add depth to your routine. This may be done both inward and outward.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

Outward open hi-hat: { ts }
Inward open hi-hat: { ^tsh }

How it's done

Outward open hi-hat
  1. Make a simple t sound but have your teeth lightly closed.
  2. Move the tip of your tongue forward behind your front teeth for a thin hat sound and to the traditional t position for a heavy hat sound.
  3. Breathe out for longer to create the open hat sound.
Inward open hi-hat
The inward hi-hat sound is a combination of two sounds - the closed hi-hat { t } and { s }. As you are breathing in it is notated with a { ^ } and a { h } to become { ^tsh }
  1. Start with your tongue on your alveolar ridge (space between roof of the mouth and top of your teeth)
  2. Draw your tongue down and towards the back into your mouth whilst breathing in.

EGG SHAKER

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

The egg shaker is a common shaker that is in the shape of an egg. It is usually plastic and filled with beads and fits snugly in the palm of the hand to give a mellow sounding rhythm section.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ chsh }

How it's done

The egg shaker is comprised of two sounds made one after the other { ch } and then { sh }. The first emulates the push of the shaker and the other, the pull of the shaker (i.e. moving the shaker forwards and backwards).
How to do the sh sound
  1. To make this sound first say 'suka' (yes, like sucker).
  2. Remove the vocalization it so it becomes 'sk' (it should still sound like two sounds 's' and 'k').
  3. Finally try replacing the 's' with 'sh'
How to do the ch sound
  1. To make the push sound, all you need to do is make a gentle unvocalised { ch } sound like you're saying the words "chive" or "child"
  2. To make the pull sound is simply a { sh } sound that starts off quietly and then gets louder, then quiet again - { shSHsh }.
  3. Put the two together and you get { ch shSHsh } but we notate it as { chsh }.

REVERSE OPEN HI-HAT

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

The reverse open hi-hat is a basic sound that can act both as a sweep and a nice filler effect.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ ^shd }

How it's done

  1. Position your mouth as if you are going to say the letter E, S or L (or somewhere between them).
  2. Keep your tongue in position and breathe in. The air rushing in will make a sound.
  3. Okay, now do it starting off breathing in slowly and speed up to full speed. The sound will get louder. At the loudest point as you are breathing in, simply close your mouth quickly.
An alternative to quickly closing your mouth is to start off with the tip of your tongue down low. At the end of the sound quickly flick your tongue upwards as if you were going to say the letter D.

BRUSHED CYMBAL

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

The brushed cymbal sound is a quieter version of the hard hi-hat sound. This is a quite versatile sound that will also help you develop your tone and volume as a vocal percussionist.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ th }

How it's done

  1. Start with your teeth slightly apart.
  2. Now what you're aiming for is a sound between a 't' and a 's'. It should sound like neither!
  3. Now add a 't' sound to the beginning and you should now have a brushed cymbal sound.

SPLASH CYMBAL

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

The splash cymbal is the smallest cymbal in a drum kit, that creates a warm splash sound. This is a useful but simple sound that will also allow you to take in a big breath of air.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ ^psh }

How it's done

  1. First, try sucking in or breathing in air through your teeth to make an inward 'sh' sound.
  2. Now make the same sound but make a kissing motion with your lips - as if you're kissing someone (perhaps this sound ought to be called smooch cymbal?)

CRASH CYMBAL

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

The crash cymbal is the loudest and largest cymbal on the drum kit, that creates a "crashing" sound that is used for accenting beats.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ Psh }

How it's done:

The crash cymbal is made by combining a { P } and { sh } to produce { Psh }.
  1. Start with the P sound or a hard B sound
  2. Follow through with a 'sh' sound and elongate it so it sounds like 'shhhhhh'

INWARD FAST HI-HATS | INWARD TK'S

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

Inward fast hi-hats is a rapid execution of the basic hi hat and the percussive 'k' snare in rapid succession. This technique is largely beneficial when practicing both technicality and circular breathing.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ ^t ^k }

How it's done

  1. Say tukuh tukuh while breathing inward
  2. Remove the vocalization so you only get rapid 't' and 'k' sounds
  3. Change the shape of your mouth to create flanger effects
The inward fast hi-hat is a sequence of a { ^t } and { ^k } to produce { ^t ^k }.
This can be repeated: { ^t ^k ^t ^k ^t ^k ^t ^k } or used in a beat pattern.

FAST HI-HATS | TK'S

SOUNDS APRIL 11, 2018 BY THE BEST ARTICLE

Hi-hats can be quite hard to do quickly using the standard { t t } method, so here we'll explain how to use interconnecting hi-hats to beatbox far faster than normal.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ t k }

How it's done

Fast repetitive hi-hats such as those used in drum and bass routines are almost impossible using the traditional { t t t } technique. At fast tempos many beatboxers alternate between two sounds.
  1. Learn the basic closed hi-hat { t } - you should certainly know that sound by now!
  2. Combine it with a "k" sound as if you were saying the word "tikka"
When added to fast beats this gives the illusion that you are doing multiple "t t t" hi-hats

KICK AND HAT ROLL

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)
{ BtB }
Often used as a triplet to fill in beats, this roll needs you to be able to make two sounds:
  1. Closed Hi-Hat { t }
  2. Classic Kick Drum { B }
The two sounds are combined in a sequence to create { B t B }.
