Kicks

CLASSIC KICK DRUM

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)
{ B }
How it's done
The simplest way to make the classic kick drum is to say the letter 'b' but force the air out.

Fat Tony says, "Say the word "boo". Then take away the "oo" so you're left with a "buh" sound. Get this punchier by building up a little pressure behind your lips and you're done!"

To make it sound louder and punchier, you need to force the sound. This is where you let air vibrate through your lips - a bit like 'blow a raspberry'. Once you can do this, you make a very short lip oscillation.

  1. Make the b sound as if you are saying b from the word bogus.
  2. This time, with your lips closed, let the pressure build up.
  3. You need to control the release of your lips just enough to let them vibrate for a short amount of time.
Variations
Once you have mastered the { B } kick you can make a large number of variations by shaping the mouth and voicing or vocalizing the sound { Bh } or by adding a fricative such as
{ Bf } or { Bs } or { Bsh}.

Beat Pattern

This sound is good for forming one of the staple sounds as part of a kick, hi-hat and snare beat. Here is an example: { B - t B / K - B - / t B t B / K - ts - }

INWARD CLASSIC KICK
The inward classic kick is a thick inward sound that replicates a kick drum while breathing in.

How it's done

  1. Wrap your lips over your teeth, replicating the face of a toothless grandpa
  2. Bring your lips close together, leaving a small gap and pull in a short burst of air
It is similar to the sound made by a "b" or "p" in English, but is made by inward air motion. There are two main variations in how this sound is made. It can be ingressive, meaning that uses airflow into the lungs, or it can be an implosive, meaning that does not use airflow from the lungs, it simply pulls air into the mouth using suction.

REVERSE DRY KICK

This is a reverse human beatbox kick drum sound. Unlike other reverse sounds, this one is not made whilst breathing in. The reverse kick goes well with the reverse snare or hi-hat for breakdowns.
Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)
{ vd }
How it's done
  1. Sound the word Vud. It probably sounded like vuda.
  2. Now start of slowly and speed up throughout the sound.
  3. End with your mouth in the starting postion of d. Do not follow through with the whole d sound.
Of course can make this sound unvocalised by sounding the word { fd } but again, only pronounce the very beginning of the d sound.
You can improve this sound by doing a tongue flick upwards at the end of the sound to create a click. To do this, start with the tip of your tongue on the soft gum below your lower front teeth and press hard. Then, allow your tongue to slide upwards such that it hits the hard gum above your top front teeth. This will create a quiet but audible click/slap.
The sound can be aspirated or unaspirated.

REVERSE CLASSIC KICK

This is a reverse classic kick and sounds great in fast drum and bass routines that sounds like a light 'wub.'

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)
{ wB }
How it's done
  1. Start by saying 'wub'.
  2. Now you have to do a lip oscillation. This is where you blow air between tightly pressed lips - a bit like blowing a raspberry.
  3. Now try and say 'wub' but doing the lip oscillation at the same time.
  4. At the beginning of the sound, start off quietly and then get louder towards the end of the sound.

ELECTRO KICK | DOUG E FRESH KICK

This is the classic electro style kick drum with a 70s style synth tom over the top. It's a classic kick but with falsetto humming at the same time.
Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)
{ Bng }
How it's done

  1. Make the Aspirated Classic Kick { Bh } sound.
  2. Hum through your nose (falsetto) at the same time going from high to low

THROAT KICK | ELECTRO, 808, TECHNO KICK

The 808 Kick is a punchy and stabby kick sound done entirely using your throat. Beatboxers like to put a microphone against their throat to emphasize the sound and this is a very effective technique and a real crowd pleaser.
This sound has many different names including the 808 kick, techno kick, techno swallow, throat kick and techno bass.
The 808 Kick is not a particularly hard sound to make, but putting it into a beat can be tricky for beginners. It sounds like the kick drum from the Roland TR808 drum machine and this is why it's called the 808 Kick.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ ng }

How it's done

The sound is made by vocalizing and expelling air into the gap between the glottis and epiglottis.
To make the sound:
  1. First, close your epiglottis! This means to shut off the airway in your throat as if you are holding your breath or going to swallow.
  2. Keeping your epiglottis closed, vocalize (voice). You will find that sound comes from your vocal chords but not out of your mouth or nose! You won't be able to voice for long as the gap between your glottis and epiglottis fills up with air and no more air can be pushed into this gap.
  3. The 808 Kick drum is made by allowing a bit of pressure to build up in your lungs then expelling this air quickly into the gap. The quicker you do it you get a short sound. By making the pitch of your voice low it can sound like a kick drum.
Pro tip: Combine the throat kick with a percussive K snare to create a deep techno beat using this beat pattern:
808 Kick: { ng }
Hi-hat: { t }
808 Kick + Percussive K Snare: { ngk }
| ng t ngk t | ng t ngk t | ng t ngk t | ng t ngk t |

DRY KICK | OUTWARD D KICK

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ d }

How it's done

  1. Say 'dog'
  2. Now say 'd' but try not to say 'duh' - try to keep just the very beginning of the d sound.
  3. To make the sound louder, flick the tip of your tongue down over the ridge above your front top teeth.
This is a very quiet sound, but with practice, you'll be able to do it a little louder.

UVULAR KICK ROLL

A kick roll is a very fast repetition of kick drums usually achieved by a real drummer by using two kick drum pedals. Of course on a drum machine or sequencer, you just tell it to do a heap of kick sounds in a row. So how do you do it with the mouth? Well, how about using an oscillation or two?

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ BBGG } or { PPGG }

How it's done

This method combines two oscillations.
You will need to learn a Lip Roll { BB } and Uvular Oscillation { GG }.
{ BB } + { GG } = { BBGG }

KICK ROLL

A kick roll is a very fast repetition of kick drums usually achieved by a real drummer by using two kick drum pedals. Of course on a drum machine or sequencer, you just tell it to do a heap of kick sounds in a row. So how do you do it with the mouth? This is the easiest method to learn.

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ B d }

How it's done

Practice doing the Dry Kick { d } with your lips together so that the sound is forced through your lips. This creates an oscillation. You'll find that it will start to sound like the Classic Kick { B }. You then need to alternate between the Classic Kick and the Dry Kick { B d B d B d B d }. The easiest way (but not the only way) to put it into a beat is to follow the roll { B d } with a single Classic Kick like this: { B d B }.

KICK AND HAT ROLL

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ BtB }
Often used as a triplet to fill in beats, this roll needs you to be able to make two sounds:
  1. Closed Hi-Hat { t }
  2. Classic Kick Drum { B }
The two sounds are combined in a sequence to create { B t B }.

TONGUE KICK ROLL

Standard Beatbox Notation (SBN)

{ BBDD }

Method

To learn this sound we need to learn to make a lip oscillation { BB } and a tongue oscillation { DD }.
For this method we then combine two oscillations:
{ BB } + { DD } = { BBDD }
